Montessori Monday

Toddler Tuesday will be going back to *Tuesday* - so watch for that post tomorrow!

We didn't exactly get back to our regular lessons this week.  Happily, Short Pants and I completed a thorough cleaning of all of our materials and shelving just this weekend, so we'll be down in the Montessori area this week - he's so excited.  Though we didn't work in our Montessori area last week, we did manage to squeeze in some learning time.  Short Pants has been very interested in spelling lately, and asked to bring up his moveable alphabet.  First we worked with our spinny speller made from a tutorial over at Counting Coconuts:

Then we got out our moveable alphabet.  It all started innocently enough.  First we talked about vowels and how they're needed to make words:

Then with some encouragement from me Short Pants began to use "invented spelling" to spell out words of his choosing.  This was kind of exciting as he's never had much interest in doing this before:

And yes, he decided to spell "crossbow" and "longbow."  He's really into all things knights and castles.

And then....things started to get interesting:

Err.  I decided to focus on the fact that he remembered the double o sound and was able to spell it correctly.

But then...

If you're thinking that he was trying to spell "pens" you're wrong.  He just forgot a vowel.  *facepalm*

Here's the whole sordid list of words my boy decided to spell.  I'm guessing Maria Montessori didn't see much of this in her classroom:

Does it make me a bad mom that my only reaction was, "Cool!  He's spelling!!"  At least he ended with something rather innocent:

If you've done some Montessori lessons lately with your kiddo(s) age 3 and up, please link up below.  Please also make sure to either place the Montessori Monday button from the sidebar in your post or put a link back to this blog in your post.  Thanks for reading and participating!
