Sunny Winter Solstice Ornaments

I'd been wanting to make some Winter Solstice-type ornaments for our tree this year with the boys, so when I saw this post over at Play at Home Mom I figured out that with a little tweaking snowflakes could become beautiful suns.
For this simple project you just need some sparkly golden pipecleaners and orange and yellow translucent pony beads:

Cut two pipecleaners into fourths so that you end up with 8 small pieces.  Twist your pieces together into a sun shape:

Then let the beading begin!  (yes, Peter had been using the face crayons earlier that day!)

As suggested over at Play at Home Mom, you can use wire cutters to turn the ends of the pipecleaners down once they've been beaded.  These would look pretty on the tree or even in a sunny window hung up with a suction cup and fishing line:

We will be gathering with a few friends to celebrate the Solstice, and the boys and I decided that these will be lovely gifts for each family to take home afterwards.

If you have any ideas for Winter Solstice ornaments I'd love to see them!  We are putting up the tree this Saturday and I'd like to add a few more things.  :)

I love this. Such a beautiful activity, and great for the fine motor skills too. Might just have to give it a go with my 20 month old, and if she can't do it, I'll enjoy it!

Hi Nicole, We just made a snowflake ornament that is fun and super easy, with some yellow and orange button it would look like a sun! :) Here is the link to what we did!

What a fantastic activity.
I have added it to our list. Hopefully we will get them done in time to hang on the Christmas tree, but I love how you could just change the colors of the pony beads and make them at any time of year.
